OCR: Once the most popular tourist site in the Ozarks, Meramec Caverns was visited each summer by thousands of families west along Route 66 The site's popularity was due in part to tireless promotion of the caves by Lester Dill, who opened the Caverns to tourists in 1934. Advertisements were painted on barns in 40 states to lure tourists to Stanton from far and wide In addition to pulling in the tourist trade Dill promoted the caves in other, unique ways as an atomic bomb shelter during the 1950's, training site for G.I.s during World War II and a wedding chapel in the early 60s.
